Preschool Ballet Classes in Lake Macquarie & Newcastle: A Parent's Guide to Ready Set Ballet (Ages 2–5)

October 07, 2026

If you've been searching for preschool ballet classes in Lake Macquarie or Newcastle, you've probably noticed there's a big difference between a toddler ballet class and a "big kids" ballet class. Little dancers aged 2 to 5 don't need strict technique or long barre work – they need music, imagination, movement and a teacher who makes them feel safe. That's exactly what Ready Set Ballet is built for, and it's why we're so proud that The Tribe Collective in Cardiff is the official Lake Macquarie home of Ready Set Ballet.

This guide walks you through what preschool ballet looks like, how Ready Set Ballet works, what your child will learn, and how to book a free trial class for your little one.

What is preschool ballet?

Preschool ballet (sometimes called toddler ballet or baby ballet) is a gentle, playful introduction to classical dance for children aged roughly 2 to 5. Instead of drilling steps, a good preschool ballet class uses stories, props, songs and creative movement to teach the building blocks of ballet: pointed and flexed feet, balance, posture, simple jumps and moving in time with music.

At this age, the goal isn't to create a tiny prima ballerina – it's to build confidence, coordination and a genuine love of dance. The technique comes naturally later, once children have the body awareness and focus that preschool ballet quietly develops.

What is Ready Set Ballet?

Ready Set Ballet is a structured preschool ballet program designed specifically for children aged 2–5. It sits alongside Ready Set Dance, the preschool program many Lake Macquarie families already know, and follows a carefully planned curriculum so each term builds on the last.

From 2026, The Tribe Collective became the official Ready Set Ballet location for Lake Macquarie. Classes run at our Cardiff studio as part of our Wild Child preschool program, which also includes Ready Set Dance and Petite Picassos art classes.

Two levels, matched to your child's age

  • Level 1 – ages 2–3: a gentle first taste of ballet, with lots of music, props and imaginative play. Perfect for toddlers who are just starting to follow simple instructions.
  • Level 2 – ages 4–5: a little more structure and a few more "real" ballet steps, ideal for preschoolers getting ready for big school.

Ready Set Ballet is a short, 30-minute class on Friday and Saturday mornings – just the right length for little attention spans. Many families pair it with a Ready Set Dance class on the same morning. You'll find the current class times on our preschool dance page.

What will my child learn in preschool ballet?

Our preschool ballet curriculum promotes coordination, body awareness, strength and flexibility – all wrapped up in a class that feels like play. In a typical Ready Set Ballet class your child will:

  • Build balance and coordination – standing on one leg, tiptoe walks, gentle jumps and travelling steps across the room.
  • Develop body awareness – learning where their arms, legs and toes are, and how to control them.
  • Grow strength and flexibility – through stretches and movements designed for growing bodies.
  • Listen to music – moving fast and slow, big and small, loud and soft.
  • Use their imagination – becoming fairies, butterflies or snowflakes while learning real ballet positions.
  • Practise listening and taking turns – the same skills that make the move to preschool and kindergarten easier.

Ballet or jazz – which is right for my preschooler?

It's one of the most common questions we hear from parents. Ballet suits children who love music, stories and graceful movement, while Ready Set Dance (a combo of jazz, tap, hip hop, singing and music) suits little ones who love to bounce, stomp and make noise. The good news? You don't have to choose – many of our preschoolers do both on the same morning. Our article on preschool ballet vs jazz goes into more detail.

Is my child ready for ballet?

If your child is around 2 or older, can follow a simple instruction ("hands on your knees!") and enjoys music, they're ready to give it a go. Shy children are very welcome – our teachers are experienced with little ones who need a few minutes (or a few weeks) to warm up. Parents can stay close by, and there's no pressure to join in straight away.

Not sure about timing? Our post on what age your child should start dance can help, or read what happens in a child's first dance class so you both know what to expect.

What should my child wear to toddler ballet?

For a trial class, comfortable clothes they can move in and bare feet or ballet shoes are perfect. Tie long hair back off the face, pop a named water bottle in the bag, and arrive a few minutes early so your little one can settle in. Once enrolled, we'll let you know about any uniform requirements.
